I have just launched Maximize ME Masterminds.  I am so excited for the people who are joining this journey. For those of you who have never been part of a mastermind, let me explain a few of the basics and some of the benefits.

Well, what is a mastermind?  A mastermind is simply a meeting of highly motivated folks who share the common goal of encouraging and helping each other improve and grow. The term mastermind was first coined by a guy named Napoleon Hill.  He is the author of the classic book, “Think and Grow Rich.”  Perhaps he is the first of the many motivational gurus in modern history. You probably already know some of his famous quotes, “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve” or “effort only fully releases its rewards after a person refuses to quit!”  He defined a mastermind as, “the coordination of knowledge and effort of two or more people; who work toward a definite purpose, in the spirit of harmony.”  Masterminds are also called “mind trusts” or having “a personal board of directors.”

Simply put a mastermind is a group of people who gather regularly to sharpen or hone each other’s skills and potential, hold each other’s accountability; provide high level, no-holds-barred feedback; and push each other to a higher level of creating a life they love.  The cool thing about a mastermind is the fact that none of the group needs to be doing what you are doing.  They do not need to have the same career path, dreams and goals.  They simply gather, around a table or virtually, to ensure that you, as well as every member in the group, is creating and growing to reach each person’s greatest potential.

Why am I so excited for this? Well, quite simply I am the type of person that needs to be surrounded by people who are positive, enthusiastic, and expect me to bring my very best to the table. I also need people to give me constructive feedback; not simply admire results. I don’t need a group to tell me what a great job I do.  I need a group to honestly tell me where I can improve.  That is what I call sharpening. I can think of only a couple of times in my adult life when this has happened.

The first time I experienced this mind trust was when a group of 8 or 9 speakers and authors gathered weekly for a period of six months. We were all doing something very different with our speaking, writing and marketing techniques. Yet, the group was most valuable in assisting everyone to connect to new resources and new ideas. We encouraged and focused our thoughts, asked each other very hard questions, and triggered concepts to wrestle with.

The second time I experienced this phenomenon was during a pre-doctoral course in leadership. About two dozen of us met weekly for nearly a year. We read many books and met with the goal of strengthening each other. We were assigned to identify our strengths and the unique experiences that created in us an “unfair advantage.” We also identified our personal vision and mission statements, created our elevator speech and a portfolio of accomplishments. Finally, we developed collateral to support our future.
