Playing the Hand, You are Dealt - Part 1
Inspired by Lessons of the Cards
Some things you just know! I always knew I’d become a nurse.
As a small child, living on the windswept prairies of the Dakotas, powerful family influence and storytelling forged my path to nursing. On my third birthday, an aunt gave me a toy nurse satchel complete with a white cap, stethoscope, pinch-on glasses and – joy of all joys – a “shot giver!” One toy does not create a specific destiny; however, the influence of strong women certainly created mine.
Courageous women willing to nurture my dreams and mentor me into my profession dealt me a winning hand. As you travel through the chapters of this book, I hope you’ll reflect on the people who may have opened doors, paved pathways, and/or guided you through dark forests and back out into the light of your success. Reflecting on your journey can bring renewed passion for your career and your calling.
For some of us, the path was clear. With the exception of a few weeds, rocks, stickers, and mud, we moved easily in the direction of our goals. For others, the path has felt a lot more like climbing a mountain. We found the pathways extremely steep and narrow. In some places we could barely hold on to thin, crumbling granite cracks. Loans weren’t approved, family circumstances forced us to drop out, a professor said we don’t have “what it takes,” or a dream job was given to someone else. Perhaps you’re there now. Regardless, with perseverance, you can reach the goal of becoming a more effective healer, caregiver, and/or nurse.
Wherever your journey has taken you until now, I invite you to spend time reflecting on the challenges, choices, and changes that have created who you are today. Embrace the person you’ve become! Celebrate everything that is right and good.
While my story is a bit unorthodox, yours is equally unique. Reflection brings understanding and appreciation. Here’s what I discovered as I examined my adventure into nursing.
